Backpackers in Cusco

When preparing for a trip and deciding on a destination, one of the most crucial questions is where to stay. One affordable and enjoyable option is backpacker accommodations, available in most destinations. These lodgings provide a range of shared rooms at different prices and private rooms for those seeking more privacy.

Why stay in a Backpacker?

If you’re looking to save money on your travels, whether you’re alone or with friends, and don’t mind sharing a room with other travellers, or if you want to meet people from around the world while still having privacy in a private room, then backpackers are a great option. Many options are available in Cusco, so I’ll review what I consider the best backpackers today.

I have a deep connection with a particular type of lodging, especially in Cusco. It all began in a backpacker hostel called “The Point Hostels,” where I made lifelong friends from various parts of the globe. I fell in love with the place, felt like part of a family despite being far from home, and relished every moment spent there. It made Cusco an exceptional destination for me. Sadly, The Point closed down just before the pandemic hit, and no other hostel can compare to its standards. I plan to write an article dedicated to The Point, so stay tuned!

After a long time, I recently returned to Cusco and was disappointed that The Point was no longer there. However, I discovered Viajero Kokopelli, now part of a chain of backpackers’ hostels throughout Latin America.

I chose to stay there because it is very close to the city centre, has many common areas, friendly staff who are always ready to help, and everything is within walking distance. From the moment I arrived, I felt comfortable and welcomed. I had the pleasure of meeting most of the staff, who were all very friendly. The hostel is a great place to hang out if you prefer to avoid joining clubs. They have excellent parties in the bar area.

The prices range from USD 11 per night for a 12-bed room to USD 60 for a double room and USD 73 for a triple room, including a fantastic breakfast and access to all areas of the hostel. This is an excellent choice if you’re looking for convenience and value for money.

I highly recommend Wild Rover as a great place to stay in Cusco. I’ve known them for years, and they have recently moved from their old location near the plaza to a new, impressive building on Cuesta Santa Ana.

The new site has a massive area for socialising, more rooms, and a bar with a beautiful view of the city. Wild Rover is part of a franchise with locations in Máncora, Huacachina, Cusco, and La Paz (Bolivia). I’ve had excellent experiences at their La Paz and Cusco locations, where I even volunteered at the bar. In Cusco, I met Chris, now the manager of all Wild Rover hostels. I enjoy the hostel vibe and have drinks at the “Fada” bar whenever I visit. Prices for the Cusco hostel range from 11.24 USD (20 pax dorm) to 64.64 USD (for a Delux Matrimonial Room Ensuite). Check availability for your travel dates on their website and receive a discount on the rate when booking online.

They also have hot showers, wifi, a co-working room, daily activities, and common areas to enjoy sunny afternoons in the garden and restaurant. It’s a fantastic place to meet fellow travellers, enjoy a great atmosphere with amazing views, and have an unforgettable experience.

Selina provides high-quality services and privacy for those seeking a more exclusive option. Selina offers smaller room sizes and more separated environments, unlike typical backpacker accommodations. Additionally, they provide communal areas and activities, such as a bar and kitchen.

Selina has two locations in Cusco – Selina Plaza de Armas and Selina Saphi – both within walking distance of each other. Prices range between 32-173 USD per night, depending on the selected option (8 or 6-bed community room, The Micro, Suite, Suite+, Family Room, Twin, or Standard). These prices include a welcome drink, breakfast, Wi-Fi, and lockers/closets. To find the best rates, it is recommended to check availability on their website and make reservations online.
